Pontarddulias v Laugharne 26.9.26
Off we went to Pontarddulias for our second away league game of the season. There was a lot of excitement after last weeks game at home so there was a good turnout of fans (well done pat your selves on the back!!).
On arrival the Pontarddulias side looked quite significant in warm up, but we remained confident.
The weather was lush. Brilliant sunshine and zero wind. The pitch looked good too
From the kickoff, we were looking interesting!!! We were awarded a penalty three minutes in, just outside their twenty two. Nico stepped up to the mark and hoofed it towards the posts but it ricocheted off the left upright and they were able to clear.
They were able to make good progress putting a lot of pressure on us in our twenty two but we managed to play our way out of danger with Tom D and Lennon taking it up the left hand side. Before being tackled. We were penalised and unfortunately Nico had to leave the field for ten minutes after being yellow carded. Pontarddulias took advantage of the situation and kicked deep into our twenty two finding a good touch. This time their forwards took it up a notch and drove over for a try right of the posts also getting the conversion to give them a 7-0 lead.
Gutted!!! We needed something and from the restart the boys didn’t disappoint. Pontarddulias gathered the ball from the restart went through two phases and kicked down field. Owain was under it,gathered and fed right to Dom who broke a couple of tackles before drifting right to find Lennon. Lennon attacked up the right chipped over the defenders, chased his own kick gathered and went over for a brilliant try in the right hand corner. No conversion, Score now 7-5.
This was more like it , even with a man down we were still looking sharp. However it would be a further ten minutes before we scored again. We had been under a lot of pressure but our defence was good and we managed to battle our way back into the Pontarddulias danger zone. We battled on their line for a while before they managed to kick clear into our half. Owain chased back for the ball and he had Dom in support who attacked up the right hand side. He got tackled but had good support. Everyone got involved bringing the ball back left, forwards and backs showing good hands. Eventually finding Nico who passed to Tom D on halfway. Tom had Lennon and Corey outside him. He fed Lennon who took it on a few yards before passing back inside for Tom D to go in under the posts. Nico got the conversion. Score now 7-12.
Three minutes later we were at it again. Pontarddulias had been five yards out from our line when we managed to turn the ball over and set up the counter. (I know a lot of supporters would be shouting kick it clear but you have to love a counter attack!!!)The ball travelling from one side of the field to the other. Nico missing out Tom D to get the pass to Lennon. Lennon made yards then passed to Corey on the wing who went outside the Pontarddulias winger and took off down the left putting in a lovely little kick to avoid the tackle but was still taken out, however Lennon was still in support and gathered the ball and went over for the try left of the posts. No conversion. Score 7-17.
In fairness to Pontarddulias they came back at us and three minutes before halftime managed a pushover try in the left hand corner. There was no further scores, so we went in at halftime with the scores at 12-17.
The second half started well when we scored five minutes in. From a scrum in our half we fed right to Nico who kicked to the right hand side of the field for the boys to chase. We got the ball and fed left. Tom D found a gap in the defence and took the ball forward. He passed inside to Logan who jinked his way through two defenders before passing back left to Matt Done who crashed over for the try just left of the posts. Lennon got the conversion. Score 12-24.
The Pontarddulias forwards were still a force to be reckoned with and managed another push over try from a line out five yards out. They also managed the conversion. Score now 19-24.
This was exciting stuff but a bit close for comfort and there would be a battle for the next twenty minutes before the next score. The game was taking its toll and all our subs were utilised. Bothe sides trying to dominate territory until we eventually got the upper hand. From a line out just outside there twenty two Tomos Rees gathered to set up the maul. We then attacked the blind side taking the ball up the right hand side , then patiently, phase after phase we gradually moved towards their line until the time was right. Five yards out in-front of the posts the ball went right to Jake who powered over for a try just right of the posts. Nico got the conversion to make the score 19-31.
We still had more in the tank and it was great see Owain get a score. Three minutes before the final whistle we set up an attack on the halfway targeting the right hand side of the pitch we gradually made our way forward when Nico made a break with Owain on his shoulder. Nico passed to Owain on the twenty two and he ran in the final try of the day. Nico got the conversion.
Final score 19-38.
Another good result from home. Thanks to Pontarddulias for a tough game and a warm welcome.
