Kidwelly v Laugharne. 12.09.26.
Saturday, we traveled to Kidwelly for our first league encounter of the season.
It was a pretty dismal day, with a strong wind, light rain to start and then more rain in the second half!!!
There was a minutes silence for one of Kidwelly‘s finest before the commencement of the game.
We played with the wind for the first half and Nico made the most of it slotting over a drop goal early doors. We had a line out close in on the left hand side but Kidwelly were good in defence and disrupted our rolling maul so the ball came back to Nico and he slotted it over for three points.
Kidwelly had a large pack and we had a tough game on our hands. We knew that every single point counted. It wasn’t long before we had another chance of three points when we had a penalty just inside their twenty two. Nico slotted it over to make the score 0-6.
Our lead was short lived when Kidwelly were on the attack and chipped over defenders just inside our twenty two. The ball bounced awkwardly and Kidwelly went over for a try under the posts. Getting the conversion they were in the lead 7-6.
For the next 10 minutes, the game was going back-and-forth. We defended well and eventually found ourselves with a penalty a few yards into the Kidwelly half. Nico stepped up, hoofed it towards their posts and it scraped over for the three points. We were back in the lead, score now 7-9.
Six minutes later we were back inside the Kidwelly half when we were awarded another penalty. Kidwelly upset the ref so he took the ball on another ten yards to give us a penalty just outside their twenty two. Nico put it over again to give us a 7-12 lead with three minutes to go of the first half. There was no further score but unfortunately we lost Captain Mikey to injury.
The second half was going to be a battle with Kidwelly now gaining the advantage of the wind and four minutes in they hammered the ball down field from their twenty two. We tried to counter attack but we were caught out and they went over in the corner for a converted try. Score now 14-12.
We came back at them and we were camped out just five yards from their line. Scrum after scrum and phase after phase we battled for the last five yards but Nico decided that another drop goal would give us some reward for our efforts and slotted it over for another three points. Score now 14-15.
When we beat Kidwelly at Kidwelly last season it was only by one point so we knew it would be down to the wire and five minutes later Kidwelly were back in the lead after a battle on our line their pack managed to drive over for a well deserved try which was converted to make the scores 21-15.
We were putting in the effort but we needed a bit more. Kidwelly were using the wind well putting in kicks to get them down field. Each time we had to battle our way back and the boys showed great spirit to get back to within a few yards of the Kidwelly line. From a line out in the right hand corner Tomos Rees palmed the ball back. The forwards and backs taking the ball into contact. The ball being passed left then right, then back again until eventually Nico drew two defenders and passed left to Tyler who crossed for a fine try just left of their posts. No conversion score now 21-20.
Kidwelly needed the win and pilled on the pressure and were awarded a penalty just outside our twenty two. They got the three points and the score was now 24-20 with ten minutes remaining!!!!!
The Kidwelly fans were convinced that they would get their revenge from last season and take the game. But we were not giving up just yet and attacked their line again. We were five yards out but they defended well and they were awarded a penalty and were able to clear to halfway. Then ensued a battle for the halfway territory, with no side getting the upper hand, they kicked to our twenty two. With cries of “Have it” from the Kidwelly crowd as the ball entered the heavens we retreated to set up the counter attack. Harry Fuller started the counter and headed back down field at pace. Choosing to go left he had a number of players in support but chose to weave his way to just short of the Kidwelly twenty two where Lennon was on his outside shoulder. Harry passed as he was going into contact and Lennon switched on the afterburners and took the ball over for a glorious try just left of their posts. Nico converted to make the score 24-27 with four minutes remaining to final whistle.
Kidwelly were desperate for the win and had a line out just short of our twenty two and were in a good position to set up a final attack. However the line out didn’t work out for them as Tomos Rees managed to get a hand to the ball and got it back to Adam who went on the blind and put in a kick to half way. The boys chased and defended our position. Pushing the Kidwelly attack wide until they had no where to go. Tomos Davies getting stuck in!!!!! Kidwelly were desperate and gave away a penalty. Nico kicked to touch and the game was over.
Final score 24-27. A good day in the office.
