Laugharne v Fishgaurd 19.9.26.
Well our first game at home this season and wasn’t it a good one!!!!
With a number of players out through injury it was going to be a tough nut to crack and I must admit I was a little worried about our resilience but I didn’t need to be as we called on new blood and some past players to take up the mantle. They didn’t disappoint!!!
The weather was kind to us, sunshine and a slight breeze, so we were all set for some nice running rugby.
Fishgaurd fielded a large pack and looked good in the warmup so our forwards were in for a battle.
From the start we were looking comfortable and confident. We attacked with intent but Fishguard defended well and our initial attack was thwarted. Fishguard also had their chances but we defended well. Unfortunately they were able to get the first score which was from a penalty infront of the posts just outside our twenty two, ten minutes in. Worst was to follow as they managed to score a try just three minutes later!!! Score now 0-8.
Although they had the lead we had been playing with confidence and didn’t seem worried about their early scores. Four minutes later that was evident as we got our first score. From a scrum in the left hand corner of the field Adam picked up and passed inside to Nico who put in a perfect grubber through the defence allowing Tom D and Lennon to get in behind. Lennon getting the score just left of the posts. Nico got the conversion, score now 7-8.
There was more to come!!! From the restart Tom Rees gathered and went forward into the tackle. The ball then went left to Captain Rees who took it up the middle into the tackle where the ball was quickly recycled and passed left again to Lennon who broke the defensive line. Owain was on his shoulder to take the pass on the inside and accelerated into the Fishguard half. Tom D was there in support and took the pass on the inside and finished the move off with a lovely try just left of the posts. Nico got the conversion to make the scores 14-8.
We were piling on the pressure and even though Fishguard had a big pack we were able to hold our own and were awarded a penalty ten yards into their half. Nico fancied a shot at goal and boom, it went over for another three points. Score 17-8.
In fairness to Fishguard they were not giving up and were creeping into our twenty two on a few occasions but we defended well until they were awarded a penalty on our twenty two. They kicked to the left hand corner and from line out set up the maul and went over for the try. No conversion. Score 17-13.
With five minutes to go there were no more scores and that was the end of the first half.
The second half didn’t start well for us as unfortunately Aled got red carded and had to leave the field. However from the subsequent penalty Fishgaurd kicked to the right hand touch line but we managed to keep it in play and Nico kicked down field. Fishgaurd returned the kick and we set up the attack. Owain taking it up the middle of the field to half way. The ball was fed right and Nico put in a little grubber for Lennon to take it on up the right hand side. He passed inside to Logan who jinked his way through the defence before passing to Dom on the wing who went over in the corner for the try. No conversion. Score 22-13.
Ten minutes later we were under pressure in our twenty two but we got awarded a penalty. Logan took a quick tap and battled his way to the left of the pitch. The ball then came back right finding Lennon, who attacked up the middle weaving his way through the defence with Tom D in close support he made his way to their twenty two, before being tackled he slipped the ball to Tom D who took it on a few more yards before being brought down. Dan and Richie were quick to the breakdown and the ball was quickly recycled, Logan slipping the ball to Nico who went in under the posts for a fine try. Nico also got the conversion to make the scores 29-13.
The boys were playing well and we attacked from deep again. From a scrum near our twenty two the ball came to Nico who put in a lovely chip over the defence for the boys to chase. It bounced lovely for Lennon who was travelling at speed and swerved his way through the defence to go over for a brilliant try left of the posts. Nico converted for the extra two. Score now 36-13.
The boys had given their all, scoring three tries in twenty minutes with a man down!!! We were up for the fight but Fishgaurd were still in it and unfortunately after two yellow cards we were down to twelve players. Eventually something had to give and Fishgaurd got a try in the right hand corner. No conversion. Score 36-18.
Fishgaurd could see there was an opportunity for a bit of payback and seized the chance to score another converted try. Score now 36-25 with five minutes remaining.
The boys dug deep and we were back to thirteen so we were able to stop the rot. No more points scored.
Final score 36-25.
A nice result for the home fans. Great to see the young lads making their debut and good to see Jameson and Matt coming back.
A really enjoyable game and a well deserved win for the boys.
Thanks to Fishgaurd for giving us a tough and exciting game .
