On a glorious sunny afternoon with very little breeze, Laugharne won the
toss with the `Quins` kicking off. Within the 1st minute, Laugharne were
awarded a penalty on their own 10m line and with good vision flyhalf Ross
Harries kicked into space behind the `Quins` defence. He then chased his
own kick to hack it on and up in support was centre Deian Thomas who
followed the kick over the `Quins` line to ground the ball for Laugharne`s
first try. This try went unconverted.
After this early promise, Laugharne threatened to finish the game off
before half time, but they did not expect the inner resolve of the `Quins`
eight who did cause problems with their tight effective drive and play.
They kept Laugharne at bay in their own 22 for a good 15min, with
Laugharne unable to break out of the stanglehold they were in. Even when
scrum half Adam Davies and flyhalf Harries cleared their lines, back came
the `Quins`to keep Laugharne on their guard. Eventually, Laugharne
`weathered the storm` and worked their way upfield and then won a scrum on
their own 10m line. Very much like Laugharne`s first try, scrum half
Davies fed flyhalf Harries who with a weighted kick behind the `Quins`
defence had centre Nick Thomas following up quickly to win the race with
co-centre Deian Thomas to cross for Laugharne`s 2nd try which again went
unconverted.
On the stroke of half time, acting captain and flanker Chris McIlwrick
pinched the ball from a `Quins` lineout in their own 22 and with an
excellent pass by scrum half Davies, flyhalf Harries had time to`show and
go` and with a sweet short pass, centre Deian Thomas was muscling his way
to the `Quins` line brushing off some half hearted tackles. Wing Alistair
Chambers converted to take Laugharne to 17pts - 0pts at half time.
Laugharne restarted the 2nd half with much more urgency and soon found
themselves in the `Quins` 22. From a well won lineout by lock Sam Palmer
the ball was spread left and then taken forward by centre Nick Thomas.
When he was stopped the ball was carried forward by prop Robert Jones and
from the ensuing ruck on the `Quins` line, scrum half Davies darted to the
blind side to cross in the corner for an unconverted try.
Laugharne were now on a roll and from a wayward kick into the Laugharne
22 the ball was gathered by wing Chambers. Chambers started upfield and
with excellent support from fullback Simon Davies and flyhalf Harries.
They were joined by No.8 Kevin Pearce who turned the cover defence inside
and out before finding hooker Martin Jones on his shoulder to take the
final pass and crash over. Chambers found his kicking boots to convert and
take Laugharne to a healthy 29pts-0pts lead.
